On the morning of January 27, 2023, around 8:30 (GMT+4), the Azerbaijani Embassy in Iran was the target of an armed assault. The perpetrator was identified as a man in his fifties who pulled up to the administration building while carrying a Kalashnikov.

Despite the Chief of Police in Tehran’s initial claim that two children were in the car with the gunman, released security camera footage shows that the man was alone. He waved briefly at the Iranian security guard and then went inside. The gunman was allowed unfettered entry to the embassy, and no attempts were made to detain him. The man was able to kill the embassy’s head of security and injure two other guards. A short time later, the shooter was captured. Investigations into the incident are ongoing.
